Prep School : Your Guide To Preppy Fashion

                                   Prepster.
                                    (noun)
A girl who likes to drape herself
                   in Polka Dots, Lilly Pullitzer
                                  & Pearls.

Lately, I've been finding my self being drawn towards a more preppy look. I don't know why, but whenever I'm out shopping I can't pass up that cute floral blazer, or the oh-so- popular, striped top. The preppy clothing style, is trending and super hot right now. You can't walk into a clothing store without seeing navy blue and coral hues. I for one am not displeased with this trend, and hope the polka dots and pearls keep coming.

Here is a list of the top ten items you will need to pull off preppy fashion:

1. The Bright Blazer
2. Something Monogrammed
3. Oxfords
4. Button Downs
5. Pearls
6. Crew Neck Sweater
7. Classic Gold Watch
8. Boyfriend Jeans
9. Bermuda Shorts
10. Tote Bag

        The Bright Blazer

This is probably one of the basic staples you already have in your closet, I must emphasize this is one of the MOST IMPORTANT items of clothing when it comes down to dressing preppy. Your blazer will be the final touch to every outfit, the icing on top of the cake. Don't skimp on your blazer! It is cheaper in the long run to invest in a more expensive, rather than having to keep buying cheap ones that fall apart after one measly wash!

Something Monogrammed

I am so happy that monograms are back in the fashion world. Having something monogrammed makes an outfit feel personal and special. Its like adding you signature to every outfit you wear. The great thing about monograms is that they can virtually be placed on anything or anywhere your heart desires. Whether it's your favorite bag, sweater, or necklace, I guarantee a monogram will take you one step further into the preppy persona.

Oxfords

Three words. Classic, classic, classic. Oxfords are one of my favorite types of shoes, they are simply and utterly timeless. But most importantly they scream, "I'm classy, and I know it." They pair exceptionally well with a nice boyfriend jean. If you do not own boyfriend jeans, you can achieve the same look for less, by rolling the cuffs on an old pair of bootcut jeans.

Button-Downs

Ahh, the classic button-down, never gets old. Might I add that this also is a MUST HAVE piece towards dressing on the preppy side. This might even be more important than the blazer.  This will be your foundation piece to most preppy outfits. Think of it as your starting point, from then on you will start to layer on top of this piece, embellishing and adding interest to your outfit. Try this: Layer a crew neck sweater over a patterned or plain button - down. Make sure to pull the collar and cuffs over the sweater so they are visible. Add some neck and arm candy, and you'll be good to go.

Pearls

When dressing like a prep, pearls will be your best friend. This will be the main stone you will ever wear. Like most preppy pieces, pearls are timeless, and add a certain sophistication to any outfit. Buy at least one pair of pearl stud earrings, and a couple strand necklaces and you are prepared for any outfit combo. Try this: Layer pearl strands over a little black dress or your favorite sweater.

Crew Neck Sweater

I absolutely adore crew neck sweaters. They are extremely versatile, and also really cozy for Winter or Fall. You can wear this style of sweater multiple ways but this are my favorite way to sport it. Try this: Button a Chambray shirt all the way up, then place the sweater on over the chambray. Make sure the chambray you purchase is a tad big on you. That way you have extra room to fold the cuffs on your arms.

Classic Gold Watch

I don't think I really even need to explain this essential piece, a classic gold watch. You would be crazy not to have one! If you haven't invested in one yet, what are you waiting for?! This kind of watch is not just for preppy outfits, it goes with everything. You will definitely get the most bang for your buck with this piece. I usually prefer Michael Kors watches, or Kate Spade. Don't feel like you have to buy these brands though. There are many affordable options out there, that look strikingly similar.

'Boyfriend' Jeans

Boyfriend jeans are comfortable, but also exude an effortless 'cool'. You can throw these bad boys on with just about anything. Try this: To add a more 'preppy' feel to your look when wearing these type of jeans, tuck your shirt in to make the outfit look more formal.

Bermuda Shorts

For those hot summer days when your boyfriend jeans, are just not cutting it. Bermuda shorts are perfect for spring and summer. These would look perfect with a pair of Sperry's or of course, Oxfords. These shorts give any preppy outfit a more casual look.

Tote Bag

Last, but not least, is the beloved tote bag. This is like the universal handbag for every preppy dresser. What I like most about this type of bag is that it has so much room! I'm in college, and this is the perfect size to carry everything I need like: water, makeup, wallet, and most importantly books!

What are your favorite preppy accessories?
